I feel like we badly need context of what today’s NWHLers experience to understand what still needs to be fixed.
obviously some things did change. But without asking current players what it’s like now we can’t know WHAT changed and what still needs work. I know a few things:
- the Pride practice rink is fine. i myself have also played there. normal but not remarkable locker rooms.

- there is no non-disparagement language in the 2019-2020 contract. all traces of that were removed.
- pride players got lots of added stuff on top of salary last year (benefit of private ownership). sponsor’s goodies but also made appearances at Bruins games, etc.

- the GMs are often in contact with the league about things their individual players need. in situations where those things aren’t available for whatever reason, it’s not due to a lack of advocating on the coach’s or GM’s behalf most times.
The league only has so much money and bandwidth. Can it be doing more? Accommodating more? Probably so. But the individual teams are beginning to become more separate from the league office as of last year and it’s changed a lot of dynamics.
The other thing I know, as someone who attended PWHPA events and has spoken to family
members- those conditions were mostly not much better, in some places worse. Hopefully progress is made in both places bc all the players deserve it.

“Media” at the NH stop did our work in a furnace room between locker rooms. We had to walk through the locker room area where players were changing. They had basically no privacy. THEY deserve better too. It’s not a league but at the bare minimum they should do better than that.
These aren’t new issues. When I used to cover Blades games the conditions were bad there too. The best way to combat this is to report on what’s missing while it’s still missing, to direct grievances at the appropriate parties, and to work on getting more investors.
