One quaint artifact of the Before Times: leftists used to have very serious debates about UBI vs job guarantee (I was Team Both). Right now it seems totally inhumane to oppose UBI, whatever else one may support in addition to it.

There’s an underlying tragedy to this: leftists didn’t want us all to become passive consumers like in Wall-E, we wanted labor to carry real weight. The pandemic obliterates this vision: becoming a passive consumer is now a moral duty (and the right is demanding active labor).
