Essential Jill Scott Live Performances: A Mini Thread
In light of her amazing VERZUZ Battle with fellow Neo-Soul goddess, Erykah Badu, last night, I thought I'd a show a little appreciation for Ms. Jilly From Philly and her amazing live performances. Please DON'T reply. QUOTE instead. Enjoy.
'Gettin' In The Way' (Live, 2000)

Jill's debut single is the very definition of a "I'm coming to you as a woman" song 😂 I love the change in tempo halfway through the performance. She rode the beat perfectly.
'A Long Walk' (VH1 Divas Live, 2001)

'Who Is Jill Scott?' was one of the most talked-about debuts of its time and as testament to her growing popularity, she was chosen as one of the headliners for VH1's Divas Live concert in 2001. She ate this up!
'A Long Walk' (Soul Train Awards, 2001)

She looked and sounded amazing here. Get into the standing ovation at the end! She would win the award for Best Female R&B/Soul Album for 'Who Is Jill Scott?' later that night.
'He Loves Me' (Lady of Soul Awards, 2001)

Backed by the Sweet Strings Children's Orchestra, Jill delivered what is now considered to be her most well-known performance. So beautifully written and passionately sung. She really brought the vocal theatrics with this one.
'He Loves Me' (The Oprah Winfrey Show')

So angelic. This pared-down live rendition was more akin to the album version of the song. Her phrasing is truly everything. Sarah Vaughan would've been proud.
'Natural Blues' (43rd Annual Grammy Awards, 2001)

Electronic artist, Moby, Jill Scott and performance art troupe, Blue Man Group, made for one of the wildest collaborations in Grammy history with this eccentric performance. Jill was a Best New Artist Nominee at this ceremony.
You Got Me (Canal+, 1999)

Originally co-written by a then-unknown Jill Scott but ultimately given to Erykah Badu to sing because MCA Records wanted a higher-profile collaboration for The Roots. When the group went on tour, they would bring Jill out for performances of the song.
'Golden' (VH1 Soulstage, 2007)

This thread would not be complete without a performance of this uplifting classic (Jill skipped it in her IG celebration with Erykah last night). This song is definitely among some of the greatest Auntie Anthems ever recorded.
'Crown Royal' (House of Blues, 2007)

Jill called this "the nastiest, most beautiful nasty thing she's ever written". The best thing about this song is its use of innuendo. For those who were shocked by THAT viral video of Jill two years ago, they should've listened to this song.
'Rolling Hills' (11th Annual BET Awards, 2011)

Clad in a figure-hugging red cocktail dress, Jill was the embodiment of grown and sexy in this sultry performance. Getting Idris Elba's fine ass to feature as her co-star was just perfect.
'The Way' (51st Annual NAACP Image Awards, 2020)

To close, here's Jill taking the audience at the Image Awards on a romantic trip down memory lane with a performance of this classic. Seeing everyone sing and vibe along along with her was just amazing. We LOVE you, Jill ❀
