Corona has reset everything. Despite gloom and doom that it will inevitably bring with it given our current structure of homes, society and economy, it is also a great opportunity to do the right thing when forced into a corner. And follow up to continue for the right reasons. /1
It has given us a chance to look closely into ourselves, our family members, friends, acquaintances, communities and public figures to realize some deeper truths that we may have been missing out on intentionally or in the speed of life. Whys have started becoming important. /2
A lot of us ignored our communities, got used to the bad air that we breathed, turned a blind eye to poverty and misery that fellow Indians suffered and stopped thinking about children who begged on the streets instead of finding a path to dignity and knowledge. Not anymore. /3
It gives space to reimagine several parts of our envisioned democracy. Great and disruptive ideas a few years ago are necessary in a time of duress. Digital learning, reimagined public spaces, effective public transport planning and social infrastructure spending for eg. /4
Crowd funding of elections and goverment itself could get a boost if a bring up the rear approach instead of a purely lead from the front approach. Effective plans and a focus on processes and outcomes can get buy-in at a time when trust in government is at an all time low. /5
A reduced exchequer makes MPs, MLAs and Ward Corporators and Panchayat Heads find themselves without money to spend and fundamentally re-evaluate roles as legislators of ideas and implementers. It can lead to churn of Halahal proportions in the digital and physical world. /6
The courts at the district level to the Supreme Court which have for years not opened their doors to the public and followed a non transparent method of judgment making with very little oversight will need to find a way to digitize, improvise and be more effectively managed. /7
We are now asking fundamental questions of our political and bureaucratic executive on effectiveness, efficiency, transparency, competence, conscience and more importantly why and how this black box works. The access, power and prestige of the elite is now getting distributed. /8
The markets will be forced to keep customers first instead of bubbled growth at all costs. Culture of producing value on Excel sheets may continue but become unsustainable if consumers don't see it as such. Production of needs instead of wants and desires will take precedence. /9
Civil society and individuals have found their competence and impact evaluated whilst individuals traditionally away from society and things considered "people facing" and "political" have jumped at problem solving. The survival of the most conscientious and competent maybe? /10
The negative past may continue to scale but those with privilege must use it as a badge for service not a passport for escape. First rate intelligence as Fitzgerald wrote does mean holding opposable ideas. Things are hopeless yet we must be determined to make them otherwise. Fin.
