Let's do another Mother's Day thread. As a reminder, when Charles Schulz was drafted in WWII, his mother was dying of cancer. Before he shipped out, his mother bid him goodbye and said that they'd probably never see each other again. She was right.
Here's what Schulz had to say about her in 1975, on the 25th anniversary of "Peanuts."
There are numerous sad strips about mothers in "Peanuts," none more so than this one. It's in the running for the most heartbreaking strip of the entire run.
It was common for Woodstock and Snoopy to commemorate Mother's Day, often by lamenting how birds left their young. Here's an example from May 12, 1974.
Some of the more poignant strips about mothers involve Snoopy at war, a sort of stand-in for Schulz himself, such as this one from November 1, 1993.
In fact, there are several strips through the decades that end with that one word: "Mom." Here's one of Spike, alone in the desert, from December 1, 1992.
Peppermint Patty doesn't know her mother and is instead raised by her father. This strip from September 27, 1973, is one of the most startling in all of Peanuts.
Anyway, I'll end here with a sweet strip from May 10, 1987, with Spike writing a heartfelt letter to his mom. I don't know if Schulz is channeling his feelings here. The repetition of the theme certainly makes it seem so.
