I used to work in communications and *head in hands* https://twitter.com/borisjohnson/status/1259440331763978240
Don’t change the message to something more vague if you also are not expecting a change the intended behavioural response, unless you somehow wanted to shift more blame onto individual behaviour whichhhh seems pretty in line with the Tory playbook tbqh
I have always been fascinated with Tory communications because at the very least they are extremely good at getting people they don’t remotely benefit to vote for them, but this is particularly insidious and in line with their & the media’s encouragement of finger pointing.
evergreen reminder that yes people may be doing bad things but if the messaging is poor and not accessible in a huge amount of cases, you cannot blame everyone for not following it to a T. Don’t take your eyes off the government.
(yes yes before anyone says it there are individual exceptions where people knowingly flout rules but also the government’s inaction and messaging has landed us where we are, isnt it)
There is perhaps an argument that the “stay home” message was too blunt as we know many people cannot, but a month and a half in is too late to amend it. We’ve accepted the exceptions by this point. To change the wording implies situational change.
as ever this thread is half look at the language how wild and half the Tories are killing you never forget
