I’m a Kiwi and I really love living in the UK. But I’m worried about this governments ability, or lack thereof, to deal with the Covid-19 crisis. There is no leadership. There is no reassurance. And so many people are dying. British people should be outraged. #COVID19
It appears many are not. This is probably because they’re out on the streets, in the parks, as if nothing happened. They cry confusion, unclear guidelines, but won’t take the initiative themselves. To keep themselves safe, their communities safe.
And the welfare they’re giving out at the moment for the job retention scheme? It’s stopping end of next month. I’m on furlough leave and I highly doubt I will be going back to work after June. Get a new job? Editorial work, comms, film work, hospitality. All dried up.
And won’t be coming back anytime soon. Farm work or care work on minimum wage? That won’t pay my rent in Oxford. It’s already sky high here and expensive to live. I’d have to move elsewhere.
Like everyone, I’ve had to battle with isolation demons, but I have the support of friends and a life here in Oxford to do that. My wonderful NHS housemate. But if I do take those jobs, I’m being forced to pack up everything and move again: another avoidable impact on my life.
But why? Because of the governments inability to be kind, to reassure, to put people before the economy, to put transparency before secrecy, to be decent. Where is the outrage? Where is the leadership?
‘Stay alert’ - is it in the air? Is it behind my radiator? Hiding in the dunny? Look out! That doesn’t sound like ‘sound scientific advice’ to me. What a joke.
I really want to continue living here, contributing to the economy, and enjoying what the UK offers. I love and adore the British people, and even consider the prospect of becoming British myself one day. Know that I will be heartbroken if I have to leave.
