with lockdown restrictions about to be lifted, it’s a good time to look at the evidence around coronavirus spread so far, and make the changes that make the most sense for you and your loved ones.
with 90% of transmissions happening in enclosed environments - ie at home, at work, on public transport or at social gatherings - it's now clear that being outside, with social distancing, is less of a problem than I had worried it was. so I'm going to go outside more.
my workplace is a large, unventilated open plan office where I sit well within 2m of 4 other people, so I'm not going to go back to work. I'm not going to use public transport. I'm going to walk or cycle places, when I need to.
I'm going to wear a single use surgical mask when I go into any enclosed space other than my home. I'm going to keep antibac gel with me when I do go out.
since most transmission seems to happen when people spend longer periods of time around one another, I'm going to think very carefully about the friends I see once lockdown lifts.
if you're spending time in busy enclosed spaces, whether at work, on public transport, or in social settings, we can't hang out.
I'm going to assume that once lockdown lifts, viral prevalence will increase, so I'm going to be really careful with stuff like shopping and deliveries - having a quarantine area by the door, using antibac wipes and cleaning down surfaces.
in the UK, we don't have adequate testing, or track and trace, so there is basically nothing to stop the virus spreading except the choices we are able to make - and very few people are able to make the choices I can.
so if you need me I'll back you. if you want my help to fight against being forced back into an unsafe workplace, I'll help. if you want help planning better social distancing at work or in your business, I'll help. we all need to stand together.
if you’re unionised, ask your union some questions:

what resources have you developed to support workers who face being forced back into an unsafe workplace?

do you have template letters ready and available online, are reps briefed and ready to defend people who can’t come in?
is union researching and proposing effective social distancing measures at work?

has the union set up online training resources for reps and workers?

are the union lawyers ready to defend people who face disciplinary action?
