Last summer, I went on Nolan to talk about a new George Best statue. I made the point that a society that excuses and laughs off domestic violence is one that turns a blind eye. I got a series of vicious attacks for that, peoplw searched out my social media to tell me just 1/
How stupid I am, how wrong it is to criticise a "legend" just because he wasn& #39;t "perfect", and most of all how ugly and fat I am (of course). Anyway later in the year NI shared top spot in Europe for domestic homicides. That was before Covid19. 2/
Now, with lockdown, domestic homicide has doubled and calls to support lines for domestic abuse have skyrocketed. A Westminster fund meant to tackle this issue won& #39;t cover NI. People in abusive relationships are drowning. 3/
And in the midst of this a major polling company and a MLA - a Unionist MLA who believes this is an integral part of the Union - are giggling about murdering one& #39;s wife while apparently doing nothing to address this decision by Westminster. It& #39;s disgusting. 4/
Platitudes about how awful it is when someone gets murdered are meaningless if you& #39;re giggling at jokes about exactly that. You& #39;re handing carte blanche to these abusers. Especially if they& #39;re a laugh, a decent fella, plays sportsball, gets his round in. They know this. 5/
Yous can just all start admitting you only care about violence if it happens outside the home and then at least the electorate know who they& #39;re voting for and people can see your words for what they are; performative, meaningless hot air.
