Lots to love in this photo, firstly it’s by Sgt James Mapham, probably my favourite AFPU photographer, secondly, it features 27th Armoured Brigade, and thirdly, it’s an excellent study of a Panzer IV, that can be read like a book.....

IWM B6344
#SWW #History #WW2
In another image IWM B6345, we can see this is ‘612’ a Panzers IV Ausf H, produced by Vomag during the summer of 1943, the circular muzzle brake, and solid guide horns on the tracks, being clues.

IWM have this captioned as from Panzer Lehr, but that’s only half the story.....
In IWM B6350 we get to see the stars of 27th Armd’s workshops who have recovered this Pz, we can also see an old turret number has been blanked out...
This is because this Pz IV was originally from Panzer Lehr, here’s a still from a well known clip of ‘sister’ tank, ‘333’, still in Lehr service, but was transferred to Pz Regt 22 of 21st Panzer in May, 44...
We can see from this close up, our Pz IV was originally ‘331’ from Panzer Lehr, transferred to 21.Pz as ‘612’ and now owned by 27th Armoured Brigade!
There are some great pics of it recovery, and links to a movie, to follow... 😉
Stills from the recovery, all by Jimmy Mapham....
