@remittancegirl You’ve got me thinking. And I’m going to put something out here that I don’t like and makes my skin crawl. There appears to be a white cultural arrogance in both the US and UK. Somehow we’re better. So what’s the common denominator? It’s more than being white..1/n
There’s no arrogance particularly about the Dutch or the Germans about this. What I wonder is whether there is a false belief for the “victors” of WW2? I also note it’s not those who actually fought that horrific conflict but their children and grand children... 2/n
Those people brought up on those heroic stories. I also note the number of WW2 survivors who supported remain in the Brexit campaigns because they knew the true cost? What did we celebrate as a nation on VE Day? Peace in Europe? The stand for freedom by a generation or... 3/n
A false belief in some superiority as a nation? As an ex-soldier of 15 years this greatly troubles me. We are all humans and until we as a nation(s) learn this I fear we are going to be seen as a small and mean nation. This needs much more thought... 4/n
But both countries seem engaged in a search/yearning for a past that didn’t exist. MAGA and returning to the good old days. Both seem to be in a race to regress rather than grow. Is it because “we won”? End
