World is under attack. Everybody huddled inside home. We don't know what it is that's hitting us. And nobody's got any clue whatsoever how to get out of this.

Everybody is scared.

This is the premise of a Russian movie released in 1986. 1/n
Sacrifice (dir: Andrei Tarkovsky)
Friends and family assemble in Alexander's house to celebrate his birthday when sounds of war planes suggesting an impending world war are heard outside. Telephones go dead, electricity is cut off. 2/n
Alexander, the self declared atheist prays to god: if god can save the world from the impending nuclear holocaust, Alexander promises to sacrifice everything that he loves, including his house, his son. 3/n
Alexander's friend , Otto the postman informs him that if he goes to the house of the house maid Maria, who is believed to be a witch and lie with her, everything will be saved 4/n
Alexander obliges Otto's suggestion.

Next day (?) Alexander wakes up to see that the world is back to normal.

Now, Alexander has to keep his side of the promise.

He burns down his house. Just before he was taken in an ambulance to hospital.5/n

1. Sacrifice is one movie which cannot be 'explained' in any other medium other than (Tarkovsky's) cinema, let alone in a twit thread
