THREAD.

24 years ago today Val and I got married. We were married at Swindon Registry Office in Greater Manchester.

We’d been together five years and since we’d met in 1991, nothing went in the natural order of things!

We met in October 1991 and bought our first house

1/
...in Salford - a large three bedroom terrace on Irlams O’th Height about a mile from Salford Uni. We bought it and moved in within 9 months.

Within 3 years our first daughter Millie was born (this was her for the whole day - a mixture of energy and ‘being two’!

In 1996 we had no money, we scraped enough together to get clothes, the great Monton Bistro did us a deal with half a bottle of wine with every meal and Annie lent us her Dolomite for a wedding car...and her husband / my best man Dave drove it.

The weather was thankfully sunny and friends and family all behaved themselves (my parents were there with their new partners so this wasn’t guaranteed!)

We had no photographer but we asked everyone for a copy of their photos so we’ve got some pics from weird angles and...
4/
...lots of the same pictures.
There are loads of group shots made up in many formations. Here’s the whole group.

As well as friends there are people we see in there and wonder ‘why did we invite them? We hardly knew them’ and I also see people no longer with us.

Here’s our ‘Best People’ / Maids of Honour and you can see that although there was a veneer of normality, we didn’t have uniforms or much structure.

Annie and Dave are designers and artists, Mary is a feminist academic and Millie is now a teacher. She stood still for this!

It really was a lovely day, shared with friends and loved-ones and what I’d say to anyone on their journey to a wedding - don’t get caught up in other peoples’ obsessions, it’s YOUR wedding, not theirs.

We had a wedding on a shoestring and have built a lovely family.

This is our little wedding photo album. It contains about 30 of our pictures from the day. I’m taking it upstairs now with a cup of tea for us both.

Have a lovely Sunday everyone.

Ends./
Oh and there’s no number 7 in the thread. (I can’t count!)
