At first glance it looks like trans prisoners are responsible for 5% of sexual assaults on women in prison over the past decade. But MOJ only started counting trans prisoners in official statistics in 2017 so that means the true rate could be closer to 20% in recent years. /2
These figures show sexual assault by women in women’s prisons is rare. 117 in a decade - that’s about 35 in the last 3 years. Over that same time trans prisoners committed 7 assaults. That’s an extra 20%. /3
We don’t know if these sexual assaults were committed by male-born transwomen or female-born transmen taking testosterone. Either way, it shows women are being put at extra risk and we need to know why /4
MOJ has also confirmed that requests by male prisoners to move to women’s jails has doubled in one year. 7 requests in 2018 doubling to 14 in 2019. /5
