DISCLAIMER: These thoughts are what I've realized while watching the series. I may have different views than you so feel free to quote any of my tweets on this thread πŸ€— As for the small details presented in this series, I may miss out some but I'll try my best to point them out.
*Appreciation tweet / General thoughts about the series*
The Gifted is really worth watching. Yes, we have a lot of shows that tackle about the issues regarding the education system and power in general but, those were often narrated mostly through the view of the oppressed--
The Gifted is much more than that because it shows to its audience the point of view of those in power as well through the character of the director. They say art mirrors reality thus, why I love how they didn't just make the Director as someone who's purely power hungry. ---
---The views of his character is made similar to the views of real life people in power who justifies that the system is there for the benefit of all, for the benefit of leading those inferior, to the future. ---
---This is to the point that it made me compare Pang to the youth. The youth are often seen as filled with idealism. He sees the system as unfair thus, he wants to change it. But, changing it requires hardwork without any guarantee of success.---
---The system, in the case of this series, is built on a 10 year foundation. It's been "perfected" as to avoid destruction. However, Pang/youth, are always there to establish a movement and make a change. Anywaaay, I'm gonna move on to my thoughts per episode πŸ€—
EPISODE 1
Props to the storytelling of this series πŸ‘ At Ep1 they already gave us a summary of what we need to expect and even gave us a preview of the last moments of its final episode. (1)
Notice that when Pang went back to his classroom after almost getting caught by Ms Ladda, the class was discussing about the mechanics of how to do a parachute egg drop yet, he already perfectly executed it (2)
When they discussed the concept of how students are given privileges accdg to their ranks, it reminded me of an episode of another Thai series called a Girl From Nowhere. Although in that series, their privileges are determined based on their beauty rank (3)
When people have special privileges in life, they don't often see how unfair it is to those who are being oppressed by the system. They're not affected so why should they bother with it when they can just follow? This is the reality that Nac's character reflects. (4)
Nac has always considered himself superior to Pang so when his friend got into the Gifted program and he didn't, he reflected a person who feels uncomfortable when they realize that their power and privilege can be taken away by someone they consider inferior. (5)
BEST. TRANSITION. EVER (6)
The way they decided to bring up Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection is proof that their potentials are innate. The Gifted Program only helps them realize and improve those. This then explains why they can't be "normalized", as presented in the later episode (7)
The first time I watched Ep1, I wondered about the importance of them inserting this clip of the metronome. I thought it was related to Pang but right at the start they were already giving us clues about Mr. Pom's potential (8)
Notice how Pang's finger was placed at the pulse point in Nac's neck. Pang was the first to use his potential as he already unconsciously used it on Nac when they fought at Ms. Ladda's office. This is also the reason why Nac continued to hold a grudge against him. (9)
EPISODE 2
This episode is Ohm's character arc. So, as a summary, his ability to make things disappear stems from his forgetfulness. Yet, he is able to bring them back when he recognizes its importance. Side effect of his potential is his nosebleeds thus, physical (10)
Punn = Kise from Kuroko no Basket πŸ˜‚ (11)
AJ and JJ's characters really reminded me of Fred and George from Harry Potter. I love the twins so I was looking forward for their character arc but they never had one 😒 Hopefully they'll get more exposure in Season 2. (12)
Namtaan providing a foreshadowing of Claire's character arc πŸ‘ (13)
Ohm reminds me of Eleven from Stranger Things whenever he has a nosebleed from using his potential hahaha (14)
I'm sad that Ohm was bullied by someone who he considered his friend 😒 Anyways since we're talking about bullying, I really commend Sing's acting skills. He excellently portrayed a person who's trying to hide his problems by being funny πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘. (15)
At this moment, Ohm reminded me of myself whenever I try to run away from my problems hahaha. Just go lie down somewhere and pretend that it'll go away hahahah (16)
Lol I still don't get why Folk is drenched when he reappears. This didn't happen to Pang when Ohm made him disappear for a moment. Did Folk flush himself down the toilet while he was stuck there? Hahahaha (17)
At first I thought that this was a side effect of Ohm's potential when used to humans but then I realized later on that it's actually Mr. Pom doing damage control hehe (18)
EPISODE 3
This is Namtaan's character arc. Her potential is that she can read the memories of the items she touches although the side effect is that it takes a toll on her health. Her arc is one of the most essential as it gives a preview of the main conflict of the series (19)
Namtaan's potential stems from her trait of being curious. As seen in the episode, her mother limits her because she's trying to preserve her child's health. Thus, the reason why Namtaan has always been fond of asking questions and knowing answers about the world (20)
I just had to include this because HOW DOES HIS PEN LAST THAT LONG? Mine can barely last a week and it's already lost. Mr. Pom should teach us his ways. (21)
I'M SORRY NAMTAAN FOR I HAVE SINNED. I'm making this thread instead of making my film storyline. Oh well πŸ™ƒ (22)
The mention of Mr. Pom having a Master's Degree in Neuroscience is a huge clue about his potential (23)
When Namtaan asked Mr.Pom if her potential will be gone when she leaves the Gifted program. He answers this instead of a yes or no. Leaving the program does not mean losing the potential but more of like forgetting how to use it like they once did (24)
Namtaan dropping hints as to where Pang's potential stems from (25)
Another showcase of Pang using his potential but this time, more obvious than the last. Although Mr. Pom is yet to notice at this point because he thought that it's just mere persuasion (26)
Mr. Pom's effect of doing damage control for the school yet again hehe (27)
EPISODE 4
Claire's potential is that she can see the feelings of another person as indicated through colors. This, I think, stems from the fact that she's always been good at reading them and knows how to play with her emotions due to being an actress. (28)
Claire's arc is probably one of my favorites. I just love how sassy she is and their use of colors for this episode is just πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ (29)
I just love thiiiis. It's like an opening curtain for the start of a play 😍 I mean, they did put her character in the Drama club so this makes a lot of sense lol (30)
As a violinist, I'm happy to see that the team made an effort to sync the classical music being played and Gun's movements. Although it's not perfect but it's good. I believe that they actually hired someone to teach Gun since at some point, he was playing the right notes. (31)
Funny how they make a play about a White City and how its citizens want purity when what's happening at their drama club is the exact opposite hahahah the irony hahaha (32)
So far, they've referenced Kuroko no Basket and Harry Potter. Now, we have a Sailor Moon and Cinderella reference! Yey! (33)
I was honestly so uncomfortable while watching this scene. I was reminded by all the scandals some of the girls faced back in my high school. People are feasting over these kinds of videos that they don't even realize the effect this has on the victim (34)
I was honestly glad that Claire didn't put out Pangrum's scandal despite how she wanted revenge. Claire of all people, should know what that feels like (35)
I just love the use of colors 😍 Look at how in love he is as he's seeing Claire perform 😭😍 (36)
They actually revealed a bit of the side effects of Punn's potential when Claire tried to read his feelings yet saw a variety of colors instead of one (37)
Rather than seeing a variety of colors when Claire tried to read Punn's feelings once more, she saw pink because his real personality was dominant than all the others at that time (38)
In most shows, drawings like that usually serve as an indication of a troubled person thus, this served as a preview for Punn's character arc. (39)
EPISODE 5
This episode really disturbed me. Not because it was bad but because it was so good that it was actually terrifying. They tackled really heavy topics and did not fail to discuss them either. (40)
Punn's multiple personality disorder emerged because of his ability. But, people need to realize this happens to real people and mental health problems are not myths but real issues that a lot of people have to deal with (41)
I was really frustrated when they showed this clip of this guy from the Ministry of Education. People like him who brush off the fact talented people are not allowed to have suicidal thoughts are partly the reason why they have them in the first place. (42)
Punn is the youngest sibling and those who preceded him are gifted as well. It's no wonder that he feels pressured to excel in all areas. Due to this, he's always been putting up a mask in front of the adults that he doesn't even know himself anymore 😒 (43)
Supposedly, the purpose of the education system is for students to help each other improve and prepare for a future that they want to make for themselves. It's not supposed to be a breeding ground where students are made to unhealthily compete against each other πŸ™ƒ (44)
The way Punn broke down in front of Claire and turned around then faced her as if nothing happened honestly gave me goosebumps. He's so used to always composing himself that it hurts 😭 (45)
I'm glad that Claire served as a support system for Punn. She's the best choice there is since she could see his feelings. The fact that she also did this willingly shows how good of a person she is (46)
A big yes to how this series did not romanticize mental illness. Just because Claire loves Punn doesn't mean that he's automatically fully okay. It doesn't work like that. (47)
On a less serious note, why the heck are those two teachers just standing there looking at Punn beating up people? Cowards don't know how to exercise their authority 😢 (48)
Appreciation tweet for Gun's acting. He had the hardest role out of all of them yet he was able to play it perfect -- he played multiple personalities perfectly. He even had to learn additional skills for his character. I am in awe of this man's talent (49)
