Central coast California: this county has under 1,000 confirmed cases. I chatted with a neighbor today. Asked what I thought about what’s going on.
Told him I know 2 people who have died and several who have been sick. NYC is my home & hubs and I usually only spend winter here-
we’re snowbirds.
My neighbor’s mind was kind of blown. He doesn’t know anyone who has been sick or died from coronavirus. He asked about the people I know who died from coronavirus. Did they have pre-existing conditions? Yes. Both were men 60+, both were overweight. He is in
the same category. I saw a ripple of shock go over his face when j said that. He asked what people who I know who have recovered from the virus have said about it. Told him they have said it feels like death.
I’m the first person he’s spoken to who knows anyone who has been sick
with or died from coronavirus.
There are still millions of Americans out there who don’t know anyone who has been infected. With the nation opening the economy and businesses back up without mass testing capacity and basically zero contact tracing, I fear every American will soon
know someone who has been infected.
That’s what it’s going to take to burst some people’s willful ignorance bubbles.
And that sucks.
