here is an IBM EGA card from 1984. kinda boring, limited to 16 colors from a palette of 64...BUT did you know people wrote demos for it?
this one is called Coldcut. had to set my Snark Barker to interrupt 7 to get it to work. recognize the name Arjan Brussee? he went on to write Jazz Jackrabbit! he's at Epic Games now.
this next one is the EGA Megademo. it wants me to answer questions about which graphics card i have.
it's also got this really funky calibration...
here we go!
kinda looks like more than 16 colors.

wow, impressive!
im speechless
the end!
forgot to mention that the Megademo doesn't use the Sound Blaster. instead it modulates the PC speaker!
looks like some of the demos may have done palette swapping to get more than 16 colors at once. the trick is described more here: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=57254
apparently Lemmings uses a similar trick (for EGA instead of CGA) to get different colors for the control panel at the bottom of the screen.
