The Enjolras and Grantaire dynamic in different Les Mis adaptations: a thread
So full disclaimer: in the Les Mis adaptations/productions there are three different approaches to their relationship: 1. Full homoeroticism and going extra mile than the canon material 2. Enjolras oblivious to Grantaire's love towards him
3. Lack of subtext during their interactions aka Grantaire is portrayed as any other member of Les Amis.
In this thread I will be focusing on the first two (especially one, who am I kidding) so, let's start:
The 1958 movie has one of the best deaths out there, certainly (and it is also a great adaptation).
Not only they're holding hands but also the adoration look in Grantaire's face is undeniable and that LINE? Heartbreaking, poetic cinema.
In the Italian series from 1964 everyone but Enjolras is aware of Grantaire's feelings.
There's this part where they're discussing R skepticism and they're like he only believes in One Thing™ Enjolras says yes, in wine and Combeferre is like:
About the death scene? Well Enjolras smiles at him and they shake hands so, I am satisfied.
My personal favorite: The Arai Takahiro manga.
Let's start by saying this is a nearly perfect adaptation, it is so true to the source material is incredible and I believe everyone should read it.
In the manga they explore all of the canon interactions between them.
We get to see the Barrière du Maine part and interesting enough, the "I believe in you" exchange happens here (which makes the fact of R not completing the task even WORSE).
Grantaire says "if Enjolras calls for me, I'll go" before passing out when they're building the barricade and that well...it is very telling really, this manga blessed me.
Grantaire looks very depressed because he is conscious of what is going to happen and true to canon, R begs him to let him die there and Enjolras, reluctantly, accepts.
The death chapter is called "two friends: One Fasting and One Drunk" Grantaire shows up and makes a fuss so they argue, Enjolras looks disappointed but he does clarify he doesn't hate Grantaire so...well, pain it is.
And as for the death scene:
While Grantaire says "long live the republic, I am one of them" we see flashbacks of the "living, dying, you are incapable of all of them" "you'll see" exchange (which was a great choice 10/10)
And then..this happens.
I love, LOVE this because Enjolras is BEAMING at him while he says that line, the look of respect and adoration on his side is incredible.
Overall beautiful and the fact they're STILL holding hands even after they die is just...wonderful.
A masterpiece.
About the 2012 movie:
It is truly astonishing to see how committed George was to show Grantaire's feelings.
It is conveyed in every scene he had, every time Grantaire was on screen he'd naturally gravitate towards Enjolras and I will always be grateful for that.
As for their dynamic? Arguably one sided but is is not like they had a lot of material to work with so we'll have to live with that.
Also this is the Look™ that sold this ship to me.
Thank you George, your Grantaire deserved better but we'll always love you.
So for the 25th anniversary we have a LOT to unpack.
I think this is one of the productions that started to be more blatant about the subtext so it is very important for this thread.
Let's begin by saying they enter the stage bickering like a married couple, thank you for that.
During this production they interact a lot, they acknowledge each other all the time.
Hadley's Grantaire is super sarcastic and fun, I personally adore the way he purposely teases Enjolras and I also like that Ramin's Enj doesn't look angry all the time as that is one of the+
biggest misconceptions of this character.
The tension between them is nearly palpable, the staring is INTENSE, you can actually feel that Enjolras cares about him a lot and that is a great thing, I absolutely approve.
What I love about this portrayal of of Enjolras is that, true to the book, he is not heartless. He cares, a lot, about his friends and others in general, so he doesn't have any intentions to hurt Grantaire of all people and he practically begs him to stay.
And then we have THIS which is one of the most painful things I have ever witnessed.
Heartbreaking is one of the words that comes to my mind a lot when I talk about them.
The 2018 London cast continued with the trend of showing them being affectionate towards each other and dismissing the idea of Enj being heartless.
During this production they look at each at other A LOT and Enjolras either encourages or initiates the touch.
I want to CRY.
For Tecklenburg, sadly, we don't have gifs but this is essentially what happens:
- The longing is INTENSE, they look at each other at any chance they get
- Enjolras sits next to Grantaire during red and black just because he wanted to...great
- Also this...no words, only pain:
The 2019 staged concert has a beautiful dynamic between them.
They're ALWAYS looking at each other, Grantaire is next to Enjolras almost all the time and things like THIS happen:
As usual, R is always gravitating towards him and when Enjolras is singing on Red and Black he smiles like smiles so brightly, the love is so clear in his eyes, amazing.
Another amazing detail is that Grantaire sighs...LITERALLY sighs and he looks so in love.
I can't.
Enjolras is so, SO touchy here, sometimes he just walks to where Grantaire is merely to touch him? Priceless and also, this, of course is one of the greatest things ever.
