Our leadership is failing us. The people of our country have spent the last 6-8 weeks isolating from friends and loved ones, home schooling our kids, struggling financially, scared of what& #39;s to come. We did that in part to flatten the curve
1/12
so that hospitals wouldn& #39;t be overwhelmed (and it worked!), but we also did that to give our leaders time to develop an effective strategy to deal with COVID. Other countries have developed unique but effective strategies that rely on combinations of testing, tracking,
2/
isolating, citizen PPE, technology, etc.

What did we do? We had countless hours of press conferences. We (all) blamed the other side. We came up with an Opening Up America Again plan that was somewhat non-specific
3/
but was on the right track (step-wise opening, criteria to go to the next phase, surveillance testing, contact tracing, etc.)!
And what did we do with it?? Paid it no attention. Opened up with numbers worsening. Skipped the testing and tracing.
4/
Now we have our gaslighting leaders making it seem like the choice is to save the economy/country or save our people. That& #39;s just a false stance. First off, the county is the people, not the stock market.
5/
Second, the economy isn& #39;t going to get going until people are confident that they& #39;re safe to be at a restaurant or mall or movie theater, which requires that we have a plan to minimize spread of the virus.
6/
Third, federal dollars could be used to give people money for rent, give businesses money for bills, give states money for essentials services, etc, but Congress can& #39;t bring back the dead.

Fourth, WE DON& #39;T HAVE TO CHOOSE!
7/
We could have come up with a plan that keeps people safe but doesn& #39;t require everyone to stay at home for months on end

Easy, free testing for all people with any symptoms, preferably with saliva at home. Hire people and companies to make swabs and masks and testing reagents
8/
Turn hotel rooms into isolation apartments for people who need to quarantine. Create jobs to help perform testing and contact tracing/tracking. Opt-in programs on our phones to help with tracking. Surveillance testing so we know what the viral activity is in our town,
9/
antibody testing to know if we& #39;re immune or susceptible. Enough PPE so that hospitals aren& #39;t still reusing supplies, stores can give it out, everyone can have a mask. Pool all our resources so that people/companies/hospitals aren& #39;t hoarding materials for a rainy day,
10/
and distribute them to the areas that need them the most. Link farmers with extra food to food banks that need it. It goes on and on and on and on...

We should have had a solution by now. It wouldn& #39;t have been perfect, but it could have been good enough.
11/
But instead we didn& #39;t even try. The economy is still going to suck, lots of people are going to die unnecessarily.

We are failing as a country. We deserve better as a people.
