It occurred to me some days ago that I have been involved in advocacy for over 10 years now without even realising it.

Advocacy started for me in the form community engagement on the environment and how climate change was impacting on it.

Starting from my university days when @Abdul_magawater and I were involved in a project aimed at discouraging felling of trees and creating alternative to firewood. We worked in two communities that were close to our university and we were teaching people how to make "briquettes"
I remember the several planning meetings and how we had to first meet the community head to explain our project. We got his buy-in and he even asked his personal town crier to announce and compel everyone to attend our trainings and demonstration sessions
He even gave us the field around his house as a training ground. That was where I began to understand the power traditional leaders wielded.

I remember how we had to be as basic as possible & the many questions that followed from our participants. Soon we became one big family
Then the Students' Union and having to advocate on many issues on behalf of students was a a whole new experience that required a different approach.

Writing official reports to the Dean of Student Affairs and lots of follow-up
Over the last couple of years, my focus have shifted to advocating for inclusion of marginalized groups in electoral processes and decision-making. I have also helped in creation of various advocacy groups on different issues.

Doing advocacy to political parties and....
...elected officials is a whole new experience and with it comes great lessons.

Cheers to more experiences in advocacy and opportunities to learn 🥂
