Narratives about Somalia are created by people who either don’t know the actual situations therefore build their analysis on stereotypes, perception & War suuq or groups who have hidden agenda to paint Somalia as unfixable problem & failed-states beyond return. #unfair
Of course, situation is Somalia is serious, the country remains in a complex emergencies and crises, but we can’t afford to let problems define who is Somalia or Somali people.
Somalia is much more than a country with problems….
Somali people have lost their voices, & the stories about Somalia are being told by people who have not lived or experienced what living in Somalia means. It might be hard to know that, if you are reporting from Somalia in the comfort of your newsroom in London, Nairobi or in DC.
The problem is that all those negative stories, reinforce stereotypes and are make people to lose hope. Not only those in Somalia but all Somalis in the region and worldwide are suffering the cost of these negative stereotypes and one sided stories.
We are telling an entire generation, that they can’t afford to dream. To imagine the country they want. they are victimised for something they might not even aware,
It’s about time that Somalis wake up & change the narrative, that we find our voice & reclaim our own stories.
