AMAZING AFRICAN CULTURE FEATURING IN WAKANDA - A THREAD
1. Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng designed this piece that starred in the Black Panther film, which credits the dapper street style of Congolese Sapeurs.

2. Angela Basset as queen Mother wears a large disc head dress. In most of her scenes she wears a smaller version of the hat borrowed from South African Zulu culture named ‘Iscolo’

Only worn by married women in SA, sometimes reaches a metre in diameter.

3. One of the elders of Wakanda wears the distinctive locks of ovaHimba women from Namibia.

ovaHimba plait or twist their hair into thick locks, often leaving ends to puff.

4. Several scenes in black panther feature “Wakandan” text, it is actually based on ‘Nsibidi’ - an ancient system of communication indigenous to the ‘Ejagham‘ of SE Nigeria & SW Cameroon in the Cross River region. Also used by the Ibibio, Efik & Igbo peoples.

5. The ‘Dora Milaje’ tribe in the film wear gold neck rings. These are based on the Ndebele tribe of South Africa. Known as ‘Indzila’ , only married Ndebele women may wear the rings. The wealthier a husband is, the more rings a woman has.

6. A Wakandan elder in the throne room wears a lip plate which draws inspiration from the Mursi culture in Ethiopia - also seen among Chai and Tirma. Seen as a source of pride and also identity.

Typically worn by women, but worn by a man in the film.

7. In one of the early scenes in the movie, Killmonger steals a menacing long-horned mask from a London museum.

It is based on the ‘Mgbedike’ , a relic of Igbo origins in southeast Nigeria. Mgbedike translates as “time of the brave”
