Senior dev twitter, what has been your experiences with imposter syndrome?
I think a lot of people need to know it affects everyone, still affects even those we see as code gods
Got a dream gig in 2019, senior role, forex pay
That was the first time I experienced this fear... I always kept thinking I wasn’t good enough for that pay (lol) and I would soon be outed as a fraud.
Couldn’t contribute to architecture discussion/sprints because of it
Long story short I got laid off because I wasn’t giving the value expected of my position.
It wasn’t like I didn’t have a clue, I just kept second guessing everything. It’s how this thing works, you don’t see your value, all you see are potential mistakes
I later talked to people about it (I was a novice at this experience) and a lot of people has faced it many times.
I took time off, made friends to grow with
Took to asking questions on things I didn’t know no matter how stupid (forgive me for bombarding your TL)
I found out there’s a lot I don’t know, but there’s actually a lot I DO know, and I focused on that, tried to get better at that...
So far I can see progress...
I’ll keep you guys updated on how it goes
I’m writing this for people like me that see themselves as “dumber” than their counterparts, you’re a lot smarter than you think!!
Funny enough, I remember seeing a tweet from @kolokodess on imposter syndrome and reading the responses still proves helpful till date: https://twitter.com/kolokodess/status/1022594102750310401?s=21
