A little thread of my favourite South African old masters. Starting with the GOAT of painting orgies, Walter Battiss. I'm obsessed.
Gerard Sekoto's portraits reach me on an emotional level. His township scenes are so vibrant they feel alive.
Kenneth Baker's scenes of apartheid era Cape Town are so bright and nostalgic. They make me long for a community I've never been a part of.
Next we have Gerard Bhengu. Born in 1910, he once said that he learned to draw using the left over charcoal he picked from the fire when his mother was done cooking.
Welcome Koboka, do you know of his work? Not many people used to but he was one of the pioneering modernists in South African post-war abstraction. What do you think? I'm in love with everything of his I've ever seen.
Fred Page, regarded as South Africa's foremost Surrealist painter. I've spent a lot of time wondering what he was like. His work is so incredible and I can't help but think he must have been such an interesting soul.
Oh man, possibly one of my all time favourite SA old masters has to be George Pemba. His career spanned 6 decades. To view his art is to view a visual history of the transformation of South Africa. He takes my breath away, every time.
OK no thread of masters would be complete without a shout out to Pierneef. The first time I saw a Pierneef I gasped. Because there is no sky like Pierneef sky. His paintings are magic.
And then lastly, Irma Stern. I feel bad that she's the only woman on this list but I don't care for Maggie Laubscher and she's the only female old master I know. I love everything about Irma Stern if you can, you should def visit the Irma Stern museum.
Something interesting to note is that often black artists didn't have the same range of colour as their white counterparts because of course, poverty and no access to art supplies in the townships.
