Will not be sharing the fatphobic LLAMA DESTROYS THE WORLD with my students
Was looking for something light and silly for another synchronous lesson, not a title where a creature's too-fat body rips his pants and causes widespread havoc.
Llama eats too much cake, a mistake that leads to "the ultimate doom of everything". No pressure, fat kids!
He squeezes himself in to his dancing pants, and while his butt looked "groovy", "this was his second mistake". With his stomach flopping over his pants for comic effect, his giant butt rips his pants, which causes a cosmic disaster. A black hole rips open, chaos ensues.
Fat, careless Llama is oblivious to the destruction his over-eating and fat body has caused.
Eventually, the world rights itself, sort of, and the the world is back to normal, kinda, despite the careless antics of Llama and his fat body and his poor decision to eat too much cake.
However, in addition to being fat, Llama is not very smart or careful. He see some pie and once again over indulges.
I am unaware of the race of the author and illustrator, but it's hard to ignore that Llama is barely verbal. His only real dialogue is "dat" instead of "that". He's got a big butt, and he does the Cha Cha Slide.
I will not be sharing this fatphobic, vaguely racist, title with my students. @sljournal says Llama's use of slang like "dat" adds "to his dopey charm". LLAMA DESTROYS THE WORLD got similarly positive reviews from @kirkus and @PublishersWkly.
This coulda been fun, this coulda been cute, kid lit world, but I'm not body-shaming any of my students in the name of cutesy laughs. Plz reconsider sharing this title with your students. Just because @sljournal says it's all in good fun doesn't mean that you shouldn't do better.
Please spread the word about LLAMA DESTROYS THE WORLD. I'm so glad I vetted this title before sharing it on Monday.
