Wrestling (and other) references in today's #DuckTales a thread. #RumbleForRangarok
Scrooge refers to a crowd chanting for Jormungandr as "an incantation to summon the beast." "The Beast" is a nickname for Brock Lesnar who like Jormungandr is an unstoppable monster with an enormous physique.
The Norse fans start a "This Is Awesome" chant a staple of modern wrestling shows.
Scrooge's Wrestling Alter-Ego "The Millionaire Miser" is naturally based on "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase. At one point Scrooge even says "I'm The Richest Duck In The World" and you're not a variation of one of Dibiase's catch phrases.
As part of his heal entrance Scrooge collects "Back Taxes" a nod to Dibiase's frequent tag team partner Irwin R. Schyster the wrestling tax collector.
Launchpad drops several insider terms. He also calls Jormungandr "The People's Champ" the first of several references to Dwayne Johnson's wrestling days as "The Rock."
The play-by-play announcer we see at the start of the episode before Launchpad and Huey take over is an Avian version of the late Gorilla Monsoon.
Launchpad asks "Are you ready to Ragnarok?!" a reference to boxing announcer Michael Buffer's "Are You Ready To Rumble?" catchphrase. Buffer frequently made appearances in World Championship Wrestling in the late 90s.
Scrooge's opponent Strongbeard's over the top beard and 80s fashion style call to mind NWA stars like "Gorgeous" Jimmy Valiant, Michael Hayes, and the Boogie Woogie-Man Jimmy Valiant. #DuckTales
Fans chant "Fear The Beard" which is perhaps a nod to fellow bearded wrestler Daniel Bryan.
A sound effect from 70s TV series "The Six Million Dollar Man" plays when Scrooge tosses Strongbeard. Wrestler Andrea The Giant appeared in one episode of the show as Bigfoot.
Scrooge defeats Strongbeard with a shooting star press which means he must be remarkably agile for an old man. The move was first popularized in Japan by Jushin Thunder Liger.
Scrooge gets taken out with a chairshot and Louie decides to cash in with merch. In modern wrestling wrestlers take chairshots to the back rather than the head due to risks associated with concussions. #Ducktales #RumbleForRagnarok
Dewey's wrestling alter-ego "Champ Popular" has sunglasses and a haircut that recall a young "The Rock" Dwayne Johnson during the WWE's late 90s "Attitude Era" period."
Champ Popular's catchphrase is "guaranteed to turn boo into woo!" a nod to The Nature Boy Ric Flair.
Dewey's idea to get over as a babyface is to throw lollipops into the crowd. A dumb idea but WCW actually tried that with "The Candyman" Brad Armstrong.
The fans stomp and clap to the tune of "We Will Rock You." AEW wrestler Emi Sakura wears Freddie Mercury-inspired ring gear and encourages fans to do this.
Struggling as a color commentator Huey thinks the word Duplex is a wrestling move. Granny on @WONF4W's Bryan and Vinny show makes this mistake all of the time. #DuckTales2017 #Ducktales #RumbleForRagnarok
Champ Popular's jacket and entrance theme is a callback to the "Dewey High" sequence from the season 2 episode "A Nightmare on Killmotor Hill."
Anticipating Dewey's failed gimmick Louie starts selling "Stop The Pop" shirts. Big Time Wrestling promoter The Shiek (not to be confused with The Iron Shiek) capitalized on his hated status by selling "Stop The Shiek" shirts and even made a film about a Stop The Shiek movement.
Dewey's character arc is about learning to be the heal after the Norse fans reject his Champ Popular character. This mirror's the real life career of Dwayne Johnson who became the Rock after fans rejected his earlier babyface persona Rocky Maivia.
Hella the Norse goddess of death is referenced as "Hekka" an Undertaker-esc wrestler.
Hekka even does the Undertaker's sit-up spot.
Webby performs a diving hurricanrana! The move was invented in Mexico by Huracán Ramírez before being popularized in the U.S. by Scott Steiner who called it "The Frankensteiner."
Continuity Error: Dewey is pinned even though Webby was the last one tagged in and thus the legal participant.
Jormungand plays air guitar just like New Japan Pro Wrestling star Hiroshi Tanahashi loves to after a big win. #Ducktales #Ducktales2017 #RumbleForRagnarok
Jormungand challenges the Ducks to a battle royal. Curiously pinfalls are allowed as well over-the-top rope eliminations similar to Japanese wrestling. American battle royals are typically over-the-top rope eliminations only.
Some Viking fans have made a "Jormungandr Rules" banner. A hat-tip to Hulk Hogan who affixed that slogan to T-shirts, hats, and all kinds of merch in the 80s.
Ms. Beakley's wrestling persona "The Sheildmaiden" is a nod to an episode of the 1987 original Ducktales series "Maid of the Myth." In that episode Beakley takes part in an opera and is kidnapped by Vikings mistaking her for a real Valkyrie.
Leaping Enzugiri by Webby! Stunner by Beakly! Buh gawd Business just picked up King! #Ducktales #Ducktales2017 #RumbleForRagnarok
Launchpad enters the battle royal as "Captain Crash" named for a TVTropes page with Launchpad's picture at the top of it.
Returning to the ring Dewey's "Champ Popular" character embraces his heel status reffering to himself as "The Pop" another nod to Dwayne Johnson's change from "Rocky Maivia" to "The Rock." #Ducktales #RumbleForRagnarok
With an assist from Strongbeard's magic Dewey puts away Jormungandr with a giant cartoonish piledriver. Perhaps a homage to the '89 arcade game Wrestle War.
The episode ends with a still shot before Dewey and Scrooge's wrestling personas are about to have a match. This is a homage to the end of Rocky III where Rocky and Apollo are about to have one last match in private. The episode also ends with an 80s style power ballad.
Bonus during her promo Webby refers to her fists as "Lady Haymaker" and "The Duchess of Whaling'" Sylvia refers to her fists by the same names in the Disney series Wander Over Yonder.
Just realized Hekka is a "raven." Raven was another popular wrestler with a Gothic gimmick in the late 90s/early 2000s.
