My advice for incoming college athletes...

and current college athletes

Thread:
You are who you surround yourself with

If you hangout with bums... you’re probably a bum

If you hangout with teammates who get drunk every weekend. You get drunk. Every. Weekend.

If you hangout with teammates who prioritize the weekends over their sport, you’ll do the same
However if you surround yourself with the teammates that take care of business off the field and perform well on the field... you’re more likely to do that.

Surround yourself with teammates that will be honest with you when you’re doing good or bad
Choose a culture where the desired behavior is the normal behavior

The desired behavior? Winning, Championships, Playing professional, Graduating.
Example: Alabama Football, the desired behavior is the normal behavior

You’re more likely to go to the NFL at Bama because you’re surrounded with people that go to the NFL! Every year.
Being a great teammate:

Are you involved or committed to the program?

“The difference between involvement and commitment is like ham and eggs. The chicken is involved; the pig is committed”

Involvement = doing the bare minimum to scrape by.
Commitment = sacrificing for the betterment of the TEAM

Commitment is going ALL IN

How you do anything is how you do everything!

You involved or committed?
How to attack school work;

Get a tutor or academic coach. This is built in accountability.

Sit by the smartest people in the class. Identity them early and be their best friend!

Hand write your notes in class, review them at night. You’ll retain a lot

Sit in front always
At the end of the first class, go to your professor, look them in the eye, shake their hand (when that is acceptable again) and tell them your first and last name.

Your very last class give them a hand written note thanking them for their hard work and how much you enjoyed class
Lastly study tips

Over study... you’ll get a C+ at the worst. More likely to get an A though.

If the exam is on Friday, start studying Monday or Tuesday.

Study for 30-45 minutes each night (totals up to 2 hours+ of studying) , walk into the exam ace it, walk out.
