There are questions on the 1966 ‘coup’ that I’ve only come across mumbo-jumbo attempts at answers to; they include:
1. If the stated’ obj of the ‘coup’ was what it was, & that failed; why did Nwafor Orizu effectively suspend the constitution & ‘invite’ Aguiyi-Ironsi to take-over?
2. As Dr Azikiwe, then President, was away & Nwafor Orizu was Ag President, why was he NOT a target of the coup?

I’m yet to come across any account that comprehensively explains his circumstance when the dead-beat of a coup attempt was unfolding. Where was he? What was he doing?
3. Kaduna, North’s capital, was blockaded & not-so-preferred obj of the ‘coup’ succeeded there. Lagos, South’s capital was blockaded; SOME not-so-preferred obj of the coup succeeded but preferred failed there.

So why were Benin & Enugu, capitals of Midwest & East not blockaded?
4. If the ‘coup’ attempt was ethnically decolorised, how do you explain:
a. Composition of the plotters?
b. Dr Azikiwe’s EXTENDED trip, first to Europe, & then a ‘health cruise’ to Caribbean, & not returning even to the Commonwealth conference Nigeria was hosting in January 1966?
c. In consideration of ‘b’ above, Dr Azikiwe’s circumstance wrt to the ‘coup’ attempt given that:
i. Maj Ifeajuna was his cousin
ii. He has never been deemed irresponsible
iii. He clashed with Tafawa-Balewa over control of the armed forces during Constitutional crisis of Jan 1965
5. Why did Nwafor Orizu, in offering condolence for the death of Ahmadu Bello, tell Shehu Shagari that Maj Nzeogwu was “an unknown entity among Igbos in East”?

[There are views Nzeogwu, coopted 2 months after plot was in progress, was a tool in a plot he never fully understood]
