The ending of #Wadiwawepamoyo is as real as it is sad. Biko’s experience is very relatable. I’ve seen many friends jet off to better lives in foreign lands. Some post pictures of their new cars, their trips to countries with names I can’t pronounce.
Some start families they can afford to take care of. Others even start working on their first homes. I see them “living the life”. I genuinely celebrate the strides made by my friends but with each accomplishment, I can’t help but look at my own life and wonder
how far ahead I could‘ve been right now, if I was in an enabling environment.
I mean no malice at all, but I look at some of the accomplishments of my diaspora friends who are less capable than me and I’m saddened by Zim.
I have a huge love for my nation and her people. I just can’t help but feel cheated. To say the least, I feel as though we have headless people in heading positions😩
In my opinion, Zim is a vendor economy. Even if he/she has a job, the average Zimbo has to be selling something for his/her personal economics to make sense. I understand the big chat about entrepreneurship, but there’s great tyranny in it.
Even a writer and poet like me should find ways to monetize his/her craft. That doesn’t make me an entrepreneur though and I shouldn’t be bashed if I have no desire to be one. We should normalize wanting to pursue specific fields with no desire for entrepreneurship.
It should be okay and rewarding for a kid to pursue medicine without having to worry about a side hustle to stay afloat. It should be okay for a kid to pursue teaching without having to worry about a side hustle to stay afloat.
It should be okay for a kid to dare to dream and not merely stay afloat while at it, but swim in the rewards of their passion.
Sad that for many young people, the Zimbabwean dream is to leave Zimbabwe.
I give respect where it’s due. There’s no liberation without a struggle. In our case, we are a struggling “liberated” bunch. We know exactly what war is. It’s a psycho-emotional battle being Zimbo.
To everyone making an honest living. Everyone with a heart that gives everything even when they have nothing. Everyone that shines their twinkle-twinkle when it gets dark. Everyone that’s stays positive. Everyone that does everything in their power to better themselves.
To every Zimbo still wearing a smile regardless of circumstance, I salute you. More power to you!
