Brighton took the lead at the 84th minute when Whelan sent the ball into the far corner. 6 minutes on the clock and the girls were one goal down.

Thankfully Engman, one of our subs, smashed the ball into the goal from a close range.

Game 9: Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea

Day: 15 Dec 2019.
Time: 14:00.

For their ninth game of the season, the girls travelled to Prenton Park in Birkenhead to face Liverpool. Attendance was very low, recorded at 540.
Line-up: Emma Hayes opted for a (4-2-3-1) formation:

Berger - Mjelde, Bright, Eriksson (c), Andersson - Ingle, Spence - Bachmann, Cuthbert, Reiten - England.

Bench: Telford, Blundell (77’), Carter (82’), Cooper, Ji (75’).
Liverpool had struggled to get goals this season but it took them just about five minutes to find the net.

The home side got a free-kick which wasn’t properly dealt with by Berger who gave it back to Charles in the danger zone. She then put the ball into the far corner.
After that poor defensive display from the girls, they tried to level it.

Andersson’s cross was headed my Mjelde and the keeper was unable to push it to safety. England and Reiten stepped up but were denied by a block on the line. The Blues were still one goal behind.
Just about a minute later, Cuthbert sent Reiten running down on the left. The Norwegian then crossed the ball to England who headed it into the far corner. That link-up 😍.

After the equalizer, the game settle down. The girls had many opportunities to score but failed to do so.
The second half saw no goals and a big missed opportunity for Ingle: her header went over Kitching’s left hand and straight to the post. Very unlucky.

Even though facing the WSL’s bottom club, the girls weren’t able to create much.
In the last 15 minutes, Hayes subbed on Ji hoping to see a better attacking display but the score remainded the same. The chances created just weren’t enough to get a winner.

This draw denied us the opportunity to move above Man City and into the second place.
This game marked out last WSL game of 2019 and we’d be back at Kingsmeadown on January 5 with new signings!

Bench: Orman, Blundell (77’), Cooper, Carter, Murphy, Napier (89’), Cuthbert (62’).

New signing Jamie-Lee Napier was part of the squad.
Sam Kerr’s first action after 60 seconds could’ve ended in a goal as she went one-on-one with Reading’s goalkeeper only to finish the ball over the bar.

The visitors took the lead as Williams hit the ball which came close Berger’s right hand and into the bottom corner.
Just two minutes later and Reading were reduced to 10 players. One of their defenders left the ball for the goalkeeper Moloney but Kerr decided to go for it. She chased the ball and was brutally tackled by Moloney.

The referee showed her a red card and thankfully Kerr was okay
The Blues tried to look for an equalizer but weren’t able to break Reading’s defence for the next 25 minutes.

The equalizer arrived five minutes before HT. England got the ball and then passed to Kerr. She brilliantly flicked it back to England who finished it into the net. 😍
The girls came back from HT determined to get the three points. After 15 minutes, Sam Kerr was against involved in another goal as her shot was saved by Laws.

Thankfully, Reiten was behind and scored a wonderful lob into the back of the net.

Simply amazing! 🤯
Cuthbert, who was subbed on prior to the goal, added a third. Laws made an amazing save to deny England but Cuthbert was here and fired the ball inside the net.

Sam Kerr was subbed off and given a standing ovation. Our January signing, Napier, was subbed on in the 89th minute.

Game 11: Chelsea 6-1 Bristol City.

Day: Jan 12 2020.
Time: 14:00

The Blues received Bristol City at Kingsmeadow after beating Reading 3-1. Attendance was recorded at 2,866.

It was also Emma Hayes’ 200th game in charge. A queen. 💙✌️
Line-up: Hayes picked a (4-4-2) formation:

Berger - Blundell, Bright (c), Carter, Andersson - Spence, Ji, Ingle, Reiten - Cuthbert, England.

Bench: Cooper, Napier (77’), Bachmann (69’), Engman, Kerr (46’).

Since Eriksson was not part of the squad, Bright was named captain.
The Blues had many opportunities to score in the first ten minutes with England’s first header over the bar, her second one saved by Baggaley.

But in the 14th minutes, Salmon gave the lead to the visitors as Cuthbert miscontrolled and the Bristol woman was quick to react.
Thankfully England, after a hat-trick of missed chances, was finally able to level it. Ingle played a looping pass into the box and Bethany, who jumped with Bristol’s goalkeeper Baggaley, headed it in the net.

It was her eight goal of the season.
The second goal came 5 minutes before the break. Blundell put us in front for the first time in the game.

Andersson’s cross came straight to her as she was standing on the edge of the box and she struck a left-footed shot which seemed to have been deflected.
The third goal came 5 minutes later. A corner kick was met by England but pushed away by Baggaley. The ball dropped to Carter who scored her first Chelsea goal.

Our fourth came just a minute later as she scored a right-footed strike from the edge of the box into the far corner.
After HT, Emma Hayes made a change as she subbed on Sam Kerr who helped make it 5-1. Her backheeled flick (yes again) got to Reiten on the left who immediately sent a cross in the box. England missed it but thankfully Ji was behind her and finished the ball inside the net.
Blundell got a chance to score but her half-volley unfortunately hit the post and then England wad denied by Bristol’s goalkeeper.

Thankfully, England added a sixth as she headed the ball into the net after a cross from Andersson. It was her fourteenth goal in all competitions.
The Blues got three very needed points as they had to face Arsenal away in their next WSL game!

Game 12: Arsenal 1-4 Chelsea.

Day: Jan 19 2020.
Time: 14:00.

Another London derby for the Blues as they travelled to Meadow Park to face Arsenal after their 2-1 win at home. Attendance was recorded at 4000.
Line-up: Our usual back four was back in a (4-4-2) formation:

Berger - Mjelde, Bright, Eriksson (c), Andersson - Cuthbert, Ingle, Ji, Reiten - Kerr, England.

Bench: Telford, Blundell (81’), Cooper, Carter, Napier, Bachmann, Spence (85’).
The Blues started confidently and after 10 minutes, Bethany England put us in front. Reiten played in England down the right. England was able to score a gorgeous left-footed strike (supposedly her weaker foot) into the top corner.

Her fifteenth in all competitions.
England could’ve scored a second one but her header was unfortunately over the bar.

A few minutes later, Reiten who had plenty of space, crossed the ball perfectly for Sam Kerr who powered an unstoppable header.

What a way to score her first goal for Chelsea!! 💙🔥
The reigning WSL champions were struggling, giving possession away cheaply.

Right before 20 minutes, Cuthbert was fouled. Reiten took the free-kick and it was cleared by a defender. Luckily, Ingle was there to smash an amazing left-footed half-volley into the far corner. 💥
Arsenal supporters were silent, taunted with chants of “Just like the Emirates” (🤣) from our travelling fans. Their women were always denied by Chelsea defenders and ended up chasing the ball a lot more than expected. The score remained 3-0 for the blues as we reached Half-Time.
During the second half, The Gunners started threatening after a one-on-one miss from Miedema.

After 68 minutes, Ji put the ball into the path of Andersson who crossed it for Reiten. The Norwegian headed it into the far corner.

Two assists and a goal for our No.11 👏.
Just 10 minutes before the final whistle, Arsenal reduced the score to 4-1. But it wasn’t enough as the Blues got the three points!

Attendance was recorded at 3,304.
Line up: A (4-4-2) formation this time.

Telford - Blundell, Bright, Eriksson (c), Andersson - Mjelde, Ingle, Spence, Reiten - England, Cuthbert.

Bench: Berger, Carter (67’), Cooper,
Bachmann (67’), Napier, Wardlaw, Murphy (78’).

It was Blundell’s 150th appearance for Chelsea
The Blues took the lead just seven minutes in. Mjelde, who scored the winner against Manchester United midweek to send us in the Conti cup final, put us ahead.

After a corner from Cuthbert, the ball was cleared and fell in front of Mjelde who finished it the far corner.
The lead was doubled just 5 minutes later. After a great pass by Erin Cuthbert, England continued her run in front of the Hammers’ goal to score again in another London Derby.

It was her 11th of the WSL season🔥.
Both England and Reiten were close to scoring a third but it was Ingle who put us 3 goals ahead before HT.

After a good corner from Reiten, the Welsh midfielder was able to head it home.

The second half began with Spence who was close to scoring a fourth but she was offside.
Thankfully, the fourth one came in just minutes later. Spence passed the ball to Cuthbert who went on a run with only one defender between her and the keeper. She fired a left-footed half-volley.

The Hammers’ boss was booked for protesting as the goal might’ve been offside.
Then came another two goals, the second for both England and Mjelde.

First, Cuthbert stepped up for another corner which was met by England who headed it home.

Then, 9 minutes later, Andersson’s cross was Met by Mjelde who made it 6-0 with 30 minutes remaining.
Two changes were then made as Carter and Bachmann were subbed on for the final 20 minutes. The 16 years old Murphy was also subbed on for England just 10 minutes before the end.

Minute 88 and Carter’s cross got into the path of Bachmann who smashed home her first of the season!
Our last goal came in stoppage time. Carter, again, crossed the ball and the Hammers allowed Murphy to power a header in what would be the last touch of the game.

The first WSL goal for our 16-years- old!! 👏
This was our biggest win of the season and allowed us to get an important goal difference in this title race. 🙌

Game 14: Chelsea 2-0 Birmingham City.

Day: Feb 12 2020

After our game against Manchester United got postponed because of the weather, the girls took on Birmingham City midweek at Kingsmeadow. Attendance was recorded at 1,928.
Line-up: Hayes opted for a (4-4-2) formation:

Telford - Blundell, Bright, Eriksson (c), Andersson - Mjelde, Ingle, Spence, Reiten - England, Cuthbert.

Bench: Berger, Thorisdottir (76’), Carter (77’), Ji, Cooper, Bachmann (66’).

Thorisdottir was finally back from injury!
The game began with an agressive Birmingham who kept on pressing, giving our Blue little space to work in. No major highlights in the first 20.

The game became more enjoyable when Telford raced outside her area to stop a through ball. Cuthbert also fired the first shot on target
Birmingham were having a good game and were hoping for a goal but unfortunately for them, a poor defensive displayed crushed their hopes.

The visitors failed to deal with a cross from Andersson which Ingle flicked towards the goal and Reiten was here to score from close range.
The first half ended just after our first goal.

At the beginning of the second half, our girls had a few chances to score as Spence forced Birmingham’s goalkeeper Hampton into action. However, the keeper brilliantly got down to her left to push the ball away to the right.
Around 32 minutes left on the clock and our lead was doubled by our No.9: England. She may have been quieter than usual but her goal was quality as always.

Cuthbert flicked the ball over the top and after a great head control, she got rid of the defenders and smashed it in.
Bethany could’ve had a second. After a bit of hesitation, Bachmann decided to get the ball, passed it to Reiten who the gave it to England. Unfortunately her left-footed strike was denied by the width of the far post. Unlucky!

Finally, Thorisdottir was subbed on the 76th minute
The Blues couldn’t score more than two goals but they were enough to get the needed three points.

Game 15: Manchester City 3-3 Chelsea.

Day: 23 Feb 2020.
Time: 14:00.

The last WSL game before the lockdown. The Blues travelled to the Manchester Academy Stadium to face Manchester City, the first in the league. Attendance was recorded at 3,542.
Line-up: Hayes picked a (4-4-2) formation with:

Berger - Mjelde, Bright, Eriksson (c), Andersson - Cuthbert, Ingle, Ji, Reiten - England, Kerr.

Bench: Telford, Thorisdottir (77’), Blundell, Carter, Engman, Bachmann (72’), Spence (90+1’).
The game started with the home side creating more opportunities. First, White’s shot was deflected behind for a corner, then her header didn’t miss the target by much.

Then it was our girls’ turn to get close with Kerr’s header being spectacularly saved.
But a few minutes later, it’s the home side who took the advantage. White was rewarded for her efforts as she slid a ball coming from Beckie’s cross underneath Berger.

The goal, suspected as offside, was given by the assisting referee since no VAR review was available in the WSL
The game quietened down for the next 15 minutes until Ji stepped up and leveled it.

City delt with a cross from Kerr which was cleared ahead of Cuthbert. The ball was then controlled by Ji who struck it with her right foot only for it to be deflected and fly past Roebuck.
The second half began with a threatening Chelsea side as England was denied a spectacular volley, shot from close range.

City retook the advantage with a counter attack after Hemp clipped a pass for Stanway who took out Bright and shot past Berger. The 2,000th of the WSL.
The Blues were behind for only eight minutes thanks to Eriksson’s equalizer. Andersson flicked a cross to the edge of the box to England then our captain was able to finish it with a powerful diving header.

What a perfect moment to score her first of the season!
The home side had a chance to go ahead for a third time after Ingle’s tackle on Weird resulted in a penalty. Stanway stepped up to take it and shot it in the bottom-right corner. Thankfully Berger was able to save it before Bright cleared it.
With 15 minutes to play, the Blues went in front for the first time after a incredible strike from England. Our No.9 received the ball from our newly subbed on Bachmann and scored a screamer from 30 yards out directly into the top corner.

A serious goal of the season contender.
Unfortunately we couldn’t get the three points as City equalized just two minutes later. Weir passed the ball to Hemp who beat Mjelde to put it past Berger.

Seven minutes of additional times were added but Welch blew the full-time whistle after 102 minutes.
This draw away was still important for the title race, as we had one game in hand and only one point between us and City. Then came the lockdown...
