"My kids won't be racist because I don't teach them to be racist" is not enough. For one, you probably do in ways you're not aware of. Two, we live in a white supremacist society. They will see racism and racist messaging everywhere. You have to actively teach them anti-racism.
They will internalize these messages. You have to be louder in your anti-racism to drown out society. You still may not be entirely successful. But you have to try. If Black people have to talk to their kids about racism, so do we if we don't want there to be more Ahmaud Arberys.
I am glad that this post is getting so much traction. I am going to work this week on compiling a list of resources on anti-racism for white parents and evaluating them to the best of my ability, so follow me if that's something you're interested in. Suggestions are welcome.
