Trump wants to make the debate “re-open or not”. Progressives should instead make the debate “testing or not”, and emphasize that it’s a silly fantasy to believe the economy can be restarted without the virus being contained.
Ideally, the battle cry in every Democrat and progressive voter’s mouth is “where are the tests?” It should be the reply to every Republican who says they are fine with killing people to restart the economy. Don’t get dragged into a false dichotomy, repeat “where are the tests?”
Trump is baiting liberals into sounding like we want forever quarantine by framing the debate around the false “lives vs. the economy” dichotomy. The way to escape his trap: “Where are the tests?” Shows we want out as badly as the right — but we want a solution that works.
The “lives vs. the economy” frame is false. This piece helps explain why: The economy will stay depressed with a virus rampaging. So let’s all swear not to reinforce that false dichotomy by debating it, okay? Say instead: “Where are the tests?” https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/05/07/big-ugly-paradox-hovering-over-trumps-latest-deceptions/
This is a good example of how, however well-meaning, progressives are reinforcing the false dichotomy between saving lives and saving the economy. A better response is “where are the tests?” which helps show you can’t save one without the other. https://twitter.com/thenation/status/1258718291205513217?s=21 https://twitter.com/thenation/status/1258718291205513217
