Thread: My dad lives in a remote area on the Navajo Nation. We grew up there & it still does not have running water. It takes him at least 2 hrs roundtrip to travel to the nearest grocery store. Due to his age & curfew it's difficult for him to leave his home to get essentials.
My sister & I heard similar stories about how difficult it was for other families to get essentials w/ the daily & weekend curfews. We've been sending our dad care pkgs & asked what else can we do? Last week my sister took the lead & reached out to several orgs we could support.
We started with a small group of organizers @_DonnaEldridge @SaharSpice @SandsXDrifters @TeMeraeB to collect PPE for health care professionals and non perishable food and hygiene items. At the end of Day 1 we were so thankful for the support we received. And then Day 2 happened.
We received an overwhelming response from the urban Native community. We heard so many stories from people who had family and friends back home and wanted to send supplies so our elders would be taken care of and families would be able to stay home and stay safe.
We had a non-profit donate art supplies, another non-profit who donated pet food, a local distillery donate boxes of hand sanitizer and a lady who's husband made face shields using his 3D printer.
We even had someone donate a billboard!
We also couldn't have done this without so many amazing volunteers! We had volunteers sanitize supplies, organize and package supplies, carry and load boxes into trucks. The outpouring of support and love was beyond what we imagined.
I am still amazed and get emotional for the community coming together to help the Navajo Nation during this time. These donations will go to families in need, our elders, and homes under quarantine. Everything donated is a blessing of love, hope, resiliency, and strength.
With all the donations we filled 1 26’ UHaul, 2 20’ UHauls and 1 van. We are thankful for the Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake City for their partnership and yesterday they traveled to Montezuma Creek, Utah and safely delivered all the supplies to the Utah Navajo Health System.
UNHS is a not-for-profit Community Health Center providing medical, dental and behavioral health care throughout the northern portion of the Navajo Nation and southeastern Utah. They provide community support throughout their relief program and free COVID-19 testing.
Thanks to this amazing crew, UNHS will be able to start delivering supplies through the Utah Navajo COVID-19 Relief Program starting next Tues for home deliveries & Thurs for drive-thru services. If you need assistance in San Juan County apply at https://bit.ly/UtahNavajoCOVID . Ahéhee'!
🥰We did not anticipate the outpouring messages of solidarity. We truly are in this together. For replies asking where to donate: Utah Navajo COVID-19 Relief Program @ https://www.unhsinc.org/donation/ . If you would like to contribute to our care pkgs you can venmo at @DCSamantha. Ahéhee'!
