A customer came to check out just now and told me to "take it [my mask] off. Act like a real American." and a part of my brain just inwardly snapped. What the FUCK kind of thing is this to say to someone deemed an essential worker. I& #39;ve been here this whole time helping you.
I DO NOT HAVE the luxury of staying home. I do not have a living wage. I do not have generous leave. I have been here, putting myself and my loved ones, at SIGNIFICANT risk for weeks. I& #39;m trying to get pregnant. I& #39;m prediabetic. Justin is very prone to respiratory infections.
People lean in and fail to social distance with me every day and I HAVE TO BE HERE. I have just been able to afford masks TODAY. So, yeah, I& #39;m gonna wear a fucking mask to protect myself and my community. It is literally--LITERALLY--the only protection that I can control.
Seriously, honestly, actually fuck the fuck right off if you are going to shame anyone trying to keep themselves safe during this. Nobody has time for that.
