One side-effect of being the guy often seen wandering round the office in a cycle helmet is that sometimes I get asked for advice on buying a bike.
The strange thing is that the last time I bought a bike for myself, in 2007, I did it so well I haven& #39;t needed another since.
Though we have in the intervening time bought a number of bikes for the children, including the very successful purchase of my daughter& #39;s Ridgeback Voyage from @FlagBikes
My own bike, incidentally, is this beautiful, hugely useful Surly Long Haul Trucker, supplied by @brixtoncycles:
But in the course of sending some advice to a colleague this morning, it did occur to me that the Platonic ideal of a bike people should be buying to start commuting is this @GenesisBikesUK Smithfield: https://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bike/Smithfield-2020">https://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bike/Smit...
It has mudguards, sturdy wheels, low-maintenance hub gears, a good, upright riding position and low-maintenance, high-performance disc brakes.
I know people will balk at spending nearly £1,000 on a bike. But that bike looks like it& #39;s going to last you years and years - and be a lot of fun to ride.
Perhaps someone who owns one will disabuse me but it looks like a great option for someone starting out.
