So today last year was the beginning of the task that took up much of my year, a campaign to remove the mayor of Hoschton and her crony councilman after their racist actions threw the town into the national spotlight.
It was this story that sent me to the Hoschton City Council meeting that night, a meeting where I met many folks that became close friends in the last year. https://www.ajc.com/news/local-govt--politics/georgia-mayor-under-fire-for-alleged-remarks-about-black-job-candidate/Qr403ZLnF5VuB8CzpngLjP/">https://www.ajc.com/news/loca...
Over that year I worked with Dems, Republicans, and lots more folks that just want our elected representatives grounded in 2020, not spouting off the racial views of the 1950s https://www.ajc.com/news/local-govt--politics/hoschton-voters-seek-recall-officials-who-sparked-racial-strife/irAmMVAT8jFxcc23vYPtqI/">https://www.ajc.com/news/loca...
Over the course of that year we organized. We went door to door talking to residents, getting petitions signed, and getting a recall thru the courts. https://www.ajc.com/news/local-govt--politics/hoschton-recall-petition-can-move-forward-judge-rules/m6vUhYIHHaEoZiTs8pMZdJ/">https://www.ajc.com/news/loca...
And while we were recalling two officials, we elected two men by a two to one margin against a councilwoman seen as the mayor& #39;s ally. https://www.ajc.com/news/state--regional/georgia-town-activism-challenges-south-raical-narrative/zQb1Kx23XbrbjnWgI4XQaP/">https://www.ajc.com/news/stat...
And before the mayor and councilman could meet the same fate - they resigned. https://www.ajc.com/news/breaking-news/breaking-hoschton-mayor-resigns-ahead-recall-election/dt8T0ne0nOeO80pmdo5fgM/">https://www.ajc.com/news/brea...
The unreported story was the displeasure shown by Jackson County House Rep Tommy Benton. He made his views well known that he did not support this effort at all.
Rep Benton knew a direct line could be drawn between the views expressed by Councilman Cleveland and his own comments to the media. https://www.ajc.com/blog/investigations/lawmaker-kkk-made-people-straighten/QUYypM8evZYmlZojQ9ZdmO/">https://www.ajc.com/blog/inve...
He& #39;s made his views very clear. That& #39;s why I made the decision to run this race against him this year. Jackson County is Ready. https://www.ajc.com/news/local-govt--politics/benton-says-still-doesn-want-his-name-mlk-monument-capitol/b6sMpZA5Eu1PdMXQseFk3K/">https://www.ajc.com/news/loca...
Even in office for 15 years, his constituents don& #39;t know him. Atlanta does, and even his Republican colleagues are embarrassed by him. https://www.ajc.com/news/state--regional-govt--politics/controversial-lawmaker-punished-for-civil-war-mailer/d4yAtaW0dNU5PAkpRubIIN/">https://www.ajc.com/news/stat...
The folks of HD-31 may not always agree with me, but I promise to never embarrass you. I promise to worry about the actual issues of Georgia and Jackson County. Rural broadband and access to healthcare. I will stay focused on 2020, not 1865.
But I need your support to make this race happen. WE WON in Hoschton by getting the message out. We can do it across the county with your help. https://fullerforgeorgia.com/ ">https://fullerforgeorgia.com/">...
