It’s important to remember the true history of the Freedom Riders, and what “non-violent” civil rights protest in America truly meant.

The term obscures the extreme violence committed AGAINST the Freedom Riders. The sanitized history buries their staggering personal bravery. https://twitter.com/RepValDemings/status/1257435747856121866
In Anniston, a KKK mob firebombed the bus, tried to burn the riders alive, then nearly lynched them.

In Birmingham & Montgomery they were beaten by mobs with metal pipes and bats.

Hospitals refused to treat them.

They were continuously harassed and assaulted.

They kept going.
The Freedom Riders transformed America. But their work is not yet done. America has not yet vanquished the ghost in the room.

The bravery of the Riders can’t only be a story for the history books. It must inspire us today.

Remember: If not us, then who? If not now, then when?
