I have spent most of today reading 65+ CVs from students / recent journalism grads. They are applying for paid work. There is some fantastic information in these CVs but some glaring holes, so I thought I would tweet some pointers. If you are a journalism tutor - please share!
ALWAYS include links to your published work. If you have a byline in the Guardian that is amazing but I want to be able to read it!
Don't share links to content behind a pay wall - I can't read it! Find another way to share the content.
If you don't have website or online portfolio - why not? I want to be able to see all of your work in one place. LinkedIn is great but it's not enough.
Don't send me a cover letter applying for a completely different job.
Don't send me an email without a CV, if I have asked for a CV. Read the application spec and then read it again. Then follow it.
Don't apply after the deadline, your email will be deleted.
Always spell my name right. Thankfully 99% of applicants did on this occasion.
Don't be afraid to sell yourself and tailor your cover letter to the job spec. But don't waffle on.
And just to re-iterate - include LINKS to published work. And your website. I can't stress this enough.
