I’m mom to a 12yo boy with Aspergers. He is extremely Hugh functioning, just a bit socially awkward. Yes, Bill Gates is on many lists of “suspected” people with autism. The mean hashtags & comments do not help the Q movement. There are those of us living this life right now.
It isn’t easy, we make many sacrifices for our children to make sure they are getting all the help and services they may need. My boy’s so high functioning that he actually had to be screened for autism twice, once at 4 (got an unofficial SPD diagnosis) and again at 9 and dx’d.
You probably would just think he’s a bit weird if you met him. He is “twice exceptional” or 2E...meaning he is both intellectually gifted and “disabled”, though his grades are all A’s; some subjects require a lot more attention and studying.
He goes through periods of obsession on many topics, ad nauseum, and then drops whatever the obsession du jour is for the next one. He is incredibly gifted at patterns, numbers, always has been. His first obsession was Thomas the Train.
For the longest time he would only wear the color orange. He hated getting his hands messy. He was also doing 1st grade math books as a barely 4 year old, with no help or coaching, teaching from mom or dad; he just knew how to do it.
Anyway, I’m a very understanding person, and almost always give the benefit of the doubt. I get that some of you think it’s funny or will get your post more likes, maybe a new follower or two...
But so help me, if I EVER find anyone talking about wanting to give MY son a wedgie or making fun of who he is for things beyond his control, you will see the mama bear come out quicker than you can type “keyboard warrior”; claws, teeth, and all. #struckanerve #soapbox #aspergers
I’m going to add some pictures of what autism “looks” like (LOL) from when he was younger. Here he is in a train shirt with orange (double winning!) and painting his pumpkin because the guts felt weird and so did finger painting.
Doing a math workbook for fun, in an orange shirt.
He never really played with his trains, just set up elaborate tracks and collected them. He could tell you how many big wheels, little wheels, if it had a coupling rod, name, number, color, etc of ANY of his collection when asked.
All orange!
And didn’t draw people, just his trains.
He loved lining things up
Did puzzles by himself
And loved all things gears, snap circuits, and marble runs...to list a few things other than trains. 😉
He’s almost 13 now. He only wears sweatpants or shorts (absolutely NO jeans), is obsessed currently with computer gaming, and all things social studies & politics. His main meals consist of chicken nuggets, Mac&cheese, or occasionally chicken noodle soup.
Orange is still his favorite color, but he long ago moved on from *having* to wear it. He dislikes all sports, loves to swim, and dances on a performance level competitive dance team.
Both of my other two biological boys are gifted as well (without autism), but big brother is about 20 points higher than them when it comes to IQ scores.
