Now that I’m done with my reread of One Piece I’m thinking of either rereading HxH or Berserk. I can’t decide.
So I chose Berserk, Miura did end his hiatus before Togashi so yeah. And we start with this scene that has way more context to it on a reread. Our very first glimpse into the whole theme of sex being associated with violence for Guts until Casca.
I’m going to be honest, it took me like 3 tries before I really got into Berserk. And it’s probably because Miura (obviously purposely) made Guts’ personality so one note in the beginning. But I can’t lie, he’s badass as fuck from the very beginning.
Miura’s really good at drawing monsters, almost definitely the best in terms of manga artists. With that said, he did NOT make a good first impression in that respect. #Berserk
More of Guts being a one note edge lord, but it’s completely forgiven because it all has a well payoff. Even this seemingly meaningless line of him hating elves. The payoff is so good that none of this is really a criticism, but since I am in the beginning I should point it out.

This nightmare is great, so much foreshadowing. You really don’t get any of it when it’s your first time reading but on a reread there’s just so much to unpack. Especially our friend right here, but that’s later. #Berserk
There’s a lot of mystery around the brand at this point, but this is what we really need to know at this point. #Berserk
Poor, stupid girl. And hey, we actually get a glimpse of how good Miura’s monster designs can be. They’re just basic skeletons but they’re so detailed and look so good. #Berserk
With most manga I don’t care about the fighting in itself, what I really care about is the dialogue around the fight and what it means in the bigger picture. But Berserk is a rare exception, the fighting is great even if you don’t know anything about the story. #Berserk
