I remember back in 2008 when I was in 100 level uniAbuja. Omoye complex where I lived was rumored to house over 30 male and female cultists, that's about 75% of the people living there. There's an initiation ground in the bush behind our compound.

You'll hear them sing and shout at one another in d midnight.

and they can offer me protection till I graduate. Some of these guys are actually very nice normal and regular guys, they even buy me things sometimes. They gave the assignment of convincing me to a Yoruba guy; Kunle (not real name), a 300level student.
I don't know what they saw in me but these guys didn't give up. Kunle somehow became my friend but I kept him at arm's length. After many failed attempts, Kunle stopped trying. He doesn't even talk to me anymore or reply my greetings. I knew that won't be the end of it.
One old guy invited me to his room one Sunday morning. This guy was in his mid 30s then and we've heard rumours that he was expelled from 3 universities before coming to Abuja. As I entered his room, I was dumbfounded for a minute. This dude was living large, he had everything.
Well furnished room with expensive decorations and electronics. He offered me 5alive and snacks. He didn't talk to me about cultism and I was in his room for more than 1 hour. He just asked about school and the regular stuff and we watched TV. When I was about leaving his room,
he said to me; "My man, join the boys wey fit provide for you and protect you on campus. No lose this opportunity, think about it." I thanked him and left.

are about to do all it takes to force me to join. He said they feel insulted that a small boy like me will take this long to get convinced. He said he knows that I'm stubborn and I have a big mouth, I might say or do something stupid that will land me in bigger trouble.
I went home that afternoon to cook rice concoction. I ate and slept till evening.
I checked my phone; a Nokia2626 and saw 3 messages from Kunle. One reads; "you arrogant foolish boy, you no de fear for your head". I didn't take his warnings seriously as I didn't think anything

could happen. I went to phase 3 that night to watch a UEFA champions league match at the viewing centre. I noticed Kunle was there too with some of 'his friends'. He waited for me by the door at half time but I didn't stand up. He eventually came to me and asked for my phone.
He deleted all his messages and cleared my call log. "Oo ni fi agidi tie koba mi", he said.

That was when I started feeling like I should avoid my house truly. I called a classmate at the male hostel and he let me squat with him. The following morning, I received a call from my
next door neighbour; Bimpe (real name) that she heard some noise in my room over d night but she couldn't go out till d morning. She told me they broke my door and scattered d room. Many things were broken. I begged her to help me bring some books and clothes to school. she did.
She begged me to stay away for a while. I turned to a squatter at d hostel. I left my house of 95k rent to stay in d hostel. But surviving in d hostel is expensive if you have no means to cook your own food. Buying food in Kigali is no joke; you can't buy #500 food and be filled,
never! You have to queue to fetch water at the 5 alive tanks. Wait for bathrooms too. I stayed at the Maracana hostel and sometimes, I'll just throw a mattress on the field and sleep. Gwagwalada is very hot so lots of students sleep outside.
I know I could report my problem to the school security but that means I'll have to watch my back throughout my stay in Gwagwalada.
Our VC then was Prof. Nuhu Yakub; a no-nonsense Ebira man. That man suspended students just for arguing about football in the school. He expelled

cultists without trial.
Let me not bore you with my long story.
I didn't return to my house, I got used to the hostel. After few weeks, Kunle and few of his frat brothers were arrested inside an uncompleted building. They were holding a meeting when the police caught them.

They were paraded in front of the school senate building and they got expelled.
I didn't know if I should be happy or sad. Maybe I should rejoice that I've seen the end of my enemies. NO! I realized that I could have been one of those guys. Expelling them doesn't mean I'm safe;

they will still continue to live at Omoye complex.
I never returned to that house.
If you know anyone that attended Unibuja from 2007 to 2011 and lived 'off k', ask them about Omoye complex.
Please say NO to cultism.
