Thread: Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) is one of the most intriguing old masters. Two of his works, the Last Supper & The Mona Lisa, are amongst the most famous images in the world. Let’s take a look at an artist gifted with boundless curiosity. He died on this day.
Leonardo was both a scientist & an artist (so I love his approach to life, having the same interests). He was born out of wedlock but lived with his father’s household. Even Freud sought to interpret his unusual childhood experiences. Woman’s Head (c1470)
I’ve extended my 2 original drawings for just €50/£45 until Monday 4th May. Check out my work & celebrate with me! https://twitter.com/RobertBohan/status/1256552688583675905
In 1466 he was apprenticed to the great teacher Verrocchio. His fellow students were major artists too - Botticelli, Perugino, Ghirlandaio & di Credi! Leonardo worked with Verrocchio on some of his pictures including Tobias & the Angel, 1470-5 & Baptism of Christ (1472-5)
By 1472 he was a master of the Guild of St Luke which allowed him independence. Even so he still worked with Verrocchio. He always preferred to a collegiate approach. Annunciation (1472-5) is an exquisite work where both Madonna & Angel are ideals of beauty.
The Hands in the drawing here have been suggested both as studies for Ginerva & for the Mona Lisa. Warrior (1472), Ginevra de Benci (c1474), Hands (1474). Leonardo was also fascinated with depicting age, beauty & emotion - particularly in profile drawings.
4 years later da Vinci was in serious trouble & charged with sodomy. He appears to have escaped prison thru Medici connections. Leonardo was also a gifted musician. Madonna with Flower (1478), Studies (c1478-80) & Madonna of the Carnation (1478-80)
One of the great triumphs of science in the Renaissance were Leonardo’s botanical studies of plants. Lady with Unicorn (c1480), Lily (1480-5), St Jerome (1480) & St Sebastian (1480-1). St Sebastian was often used as a coded symbol by gay artists.
He was in Milan from 1482-99. There he was commissioned to paint the astounding Virgin of the Rocks. There are two versions, by him, one in the Louvre (1483-6) & one in the National Gallery, London (1495-1508). The Louvre has a pointing angel which he removed in the 2nd work
Adoration of the Magi (1481-2) with sketches for the work. He was painstaking when working on an image. Much research was done, sketches made & unique paint created. Such preparation & experimentation meant that works were often unfinished, were lost or completed by others.
These four images of women are some of the most beautiful & mysterious in art history. Head of a Girl (1483), Cecilia Gallerani (1483-90), Young Woman (c1490) & The Belle Ferronière (1490)
I think his Madonna Litta is his finest mother & child. It is the exaltation of love & serenity at a spiritual level. Madonna Litta (1490) with detail & original study for the Virgin. Some think the work may have been finished, or painted in part, by his student Boltraffio
A great deal of Leonardo’s time was spent on designing & casting an equestrian monument. Unfortunately it was later destroyed. However a bronze, probably based on one of his models, is in the Hunt Museum in Limerick (pic). Portrait of a Musician (1490), Vitruvian Man (1492)
The Last Supper with details & sketches (1495-7). This is one of the most famous works in the world. His experimentation with creating paints & varnishes led to disaster as they had already begun to deteriorate as he painted. Note the beautiful preliminary studies.
In 1499 he escaped war, with his lover Salai, to go to Venice where he worked on projects to protect the great city. He went on to Florence where he created my favourite drawing by him, The Virgin & Child with SS Anne & John the Baptist.(c1499)
In 1503 he created a preliminary study (a cartoon) for the Battle of Anghiari for the city hall in Florence. It was not used. Isabella d’Este (1500), Salvator Mundi (attributed, c1500) & Madonna of the Yardwinder (attributed, 1501)
Leonardo returned to Florence in 1507 to settle his father’s estate & then went back to Milan. Study for Madonna (1501), Battle of Anghiari (Copy, 1503-5) & Mona Lisa (1503-5)
He was in Rome 1513-6 & had a good relationship with the Pope & met with the French King. He entered the King’s service in 1516, & was given a Manor House & a pension. Woman (1508), Embryo (1509-14) & St John (1510-15). The latter was based on Salai, his lover.
Leonardo was with his friend Francesco Melzi in France. Whilst there the Italian artist appears to have been close with the King, who admired his genius. Virgin & Child with St John (1510), Self-Portrait (1513) & John the Baptist (1513-6). Salai was the model for John.
He died in 1519, aged 67. In his will he left much of his estate to Melzi & to Salai. These two men had supported & loved him in life. Leda (nd), Nude (nd) & Salai as John the Baptist. The latter is a surprisingly erotic image for an old master!
