Why I love Donuts, a thread:
Donuts is the second studio album from Detroit based producer, J Dilla.
Dilla was diagnosed a blood disease known as TPP in 2002. He was also battling lupus, an autoimmune disease that attacks healthy areas in the body. During this battle, he was in and about of hospitals, which
sparked the idea to create Donuts. In fact, 29/31 of the tracks Donuts were made from Dilla’s hospital bed. He would often go to record stores, and back to the hospital to work on Donuts. There was a point where Dilla knew he would inevitably die from this disease, so Donuts was
his farewell to everybody he loved and the world. It is truly incredible how an album that doesn’t use any lyrics can convey such a powerful message about Dilla’s life and eventual death. The intro track “Donuts(Outro)” is actually not actually an intro, or an outro. Dilla shapes
the album into a loop, a “donut” of some sort. The end track flows perfectly into the intro, forming an infinite loop. Naming the Intro Track Donuts(Outro) also signifies how Dilla recognizes his life will end soon; the intro to this album also functions as an outro to his life.
Other than the beautiful soul samples and harmonies created by Dilla’s ability to flip literally anything, this album has a concept, and it perfectly sums up Dilla’s life.
