the ONE nice thing about this time is that i’ve used it to watch lots of films directed by black women that have been on my radar for a while. here’s a lil thread of what i’ve been watching and, most crucially, where you can watch them in the UK:
drylongso (cauleen smith, 1998) watched on vimeo
i like it like that (darnell martin, 1994) bought on itunes
street 66 (ayo akinbade, 2018) watched on le cinema club but not sure if it’s still streaming there
little woods (nia di costa, 2018) streaming on amazon prime under the name “crossing the line” for some reason. wonder if it’s cos of the shop littlewoods lol
selah and the spades (tayarisha poe, 2019) streaming on amazon prime
a dry white season (euzhan palcy, 1989) watched on youtube
hopefully will be using this thread to counter the constant argument people make that black women either haven’t directed films or they’re impossible to find. there ARE less, they ARE harder to find, but often people just aren’t trying enough or don’t really care :)
sambizanga (sarah maldoror, 1973) watched on youtube
haven't finished watching it yet so this is cheating a wee bit BUT dhalinyaro (lula ali ismail, 2019) is leaving the online african film festival today i believe so def watch that if you get the chance!!
