If Gov. DeSantis says he ‘can’t’ increase unemployment weeks or benefits, the reality is he CAN but WON’T. (see section 252.36(5)(a) in statute and section 4 in Order 20-52)

Benefit amounts are capped at $275 per week. That means the most you can get is less than a third of the average weekly wage in Florida. The Governor needs to take action.

The maximum # of weeks out-of-work Floridians receive is tied to the unemployment rate (& motivated by ideology)

The current max of 12 weeks is based on the rate in the 3rd quarter of 2019. The maximum weeks for 2021 will be based on July-Sept. of this year. (s. 443.111(5))

The ideologically-motivated design flaws mean our unemployment system is not designed for the current crisis. Increasing benefits and the number of weeks now fixes that. @FarmerForFLSen

Again, DeSantis CAN act during the remainder of this crisis, but will he?

If he won’t we’ve called for legislative action during a Special Session. @FLSenateDems
