When I decided to leave academia 6 (!) years ago, I threw myself into a new book project as a way to “be productive” while on unemployment. My therapist at the time told me something so so important that I’ve never forgotten:
Even if I didn’t finish or publish that project, it didn’t matter. It & I wouldnt be failures. The project was valuable bc it gave me a reason to get out of bed and not feel hopeless. (I didn’t end up finishing that project & I’m so grateful that I don’t look at that as failing)
I thought this might help someone right now, who isn’t sure what the point of anything is right now, maybe including the book you’re working on. If it gives you something to keep your brain busy with and a reason to keep going, that’s enough. You’re enough!
And by the same token, if you can’t work on your book right now or just don’t want to, it doesn’t mean you’re failing. Even if you never work on it again, it doesn’t mean you failed. ❤️
And you never know what that project will lead to, maybe years later. The research I did for that unfinished book project in 2014 led me to write the most successful thing (in terms of readership) I’ve ever produced, in 2016: https://link.medium.com/0un4NHOR15
That unfinished project was also the thing that led me to seek out @kate_mckean, who generously met with me & explained the concept of author platform & how hard it is to break thru in publishing. I used that wisdom years later on the next book project I actually finished
So yeah, literally none of us knows what the future looks like right now. Whatever it is you’re doing at the moment, I bet you’ll figure out how to make it meaningful eventually. Or not, it’s fine if you don’t!
