Been seeing some submissions where the opening is rushed to get to the inciting incident.

And while this works sometimes, we do need an important thing to really get lost in a story: character connection.

Character connection is a reason (or several) to want to follow a MC through a story.

We need a glimpse of their motivation, what they could lose, what their personality is like, etc, in order to want to see their development.

A big assumption here is we need to like the MC. Definitely not!

There are some great MCs that are awful but we still want to follow their story because they're engaging or we have been given their motivation.

Throwing a reader directly into the action can be confusing or alternatively not that big of a hook because a reader asks, "Why do I care if these characters are in a fight or about to die?"

So, it's important to ask if you're starting in the right place and if you've given enough deep pov and exposure of your MC to your readers.

Because if so, your inciting incident is going to pack the đŸ”„đŸ”„ you need.
