How many of you have heard about this cute animal; called as Malayan #Tapir. The species which is on earth since some 50 million years, saved himself from many waves of extinction. But now marked as 'endangered' by
@IUCN. Let me take you to their world. #WorldTapirDay 1/n
We call them 'watermelons with legs' as Tapirs are born like this, they later change. Malayan Tapir once found in tropical lowland rainforest of Southeast Asia, now the spread is reduced. They are herbivores & help in spreading seeds. This one at Taman Negara NP, by B Dupont. 2/n
Malayan Tapirs have poor eyesight & active at night. Which also makes them vulnerable to snares, which many a times are for other wildlife. So they get caught in them. A lot of people hunt them for meat. Another big worry for them is deforestation & human activities around. 3/n
Malayan tapir reproduces very slow, as comparison to other mammals. Pregnancies lasting as long as 14 months. Their habitat is going fast which have put them on edge of extinction. Now experts says there are only 2500 such individuals in wild. PC: http://blogs.ntu.edu.sg  n/n
