1/ +Dolan's #Trump remarks were anodyne. Boilerplate graciousness if you know the POTUS is watching.

I do NOT MEAN these are ordinary times when ordinary graciousness is appropriate. Nor do I excuse participation on the call....
2/ Only breathtaking naivete could explain failing to foresee the call would be a campaign rally.

But this is what I mean.

+Dolan's clerical noblesse explains the effort at courtly graciousness from the pulpit.

In a way, it also explains why bishops were on the call....
3/ Like their lordly eminences in The Remains of the Day practicing amateur diplomacy, they really think they're being quite clever to preserve their access and advance their political interests in #abortion & #ReligiousFreedom....
4/ They don't see Herr Drumpf's lackeys (metaphorically) sizing up the paintings and gold fixtures in the churches (as in The Remains of the Day). They don't recognize the fundamentally changed condition & so they participate in the destruction of their own way of life....
5/ Trump & those around him have no use for faith, spiritual growth, metanoia, or the delicate sensibilities of believers. They just need votes for power.

The bishops who always have thought of themselves like those lordly eminences in Ishiguro's book can't see that.
6/ Cardinal Darlington always has been deferred to, and feels long feudal history on his side. And he believes his motives are pure.

What could a butler or a pub owner know? Or a lay theologian? Or anyone else?

Of course he looks foolish today. But its different--and worse...
7/ ...than just being in the tank for Trump.

They cannot see how much they have sold in this naive transaction for political advantage.

They've sold Catholic social teaching, the vulnerable, etc., yes.

They've also sold their own claim to legitimacy & authority to a thug.
8/ And they've gotten grifted by an outer borough charletan practicing realpolitik as much as their lordships were outfoxed by an Austrian paper hanger.

American prelates have known better. #Catholics have had better leadership.
