1.The worst part is, a lot of people like nella said things in the past that, at the time were, accepted as jokes. But these so called jokes deffo had an impact on darker skinned black kids growing up. Even the little comments like “where is so and so” when the lights go off can
2. breed a culture of self hate around little dark skin kids who not only will have to face overt racism from their peers, but also colourism from their black brothers and sisters. Self hatred is such a dangerous and detrimental worldview to have especially at a young age
3. And it can really fuck someone up in future because why should a 13 year old subconsciously hate their skin because Mike said she looked like an ape, or because James screamed where’s Timi when the teacher turned off the lights, causing all the class to laugh.
4. So instead of saying “it’s just a joke” or “it’s not that deep”, u should probably look at the reasons why a black person would feel comfortable enough to degrade another black persons skin tone and further yet, probably look into why that kind of degradation was so acceptable
